The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Empire under Mehmed the Conqueror, who ordered this main church of Orthodox Christianity converted into a mosque. In 1935, the first Turkish President and founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, transformed the building into a museum. ************* #basilica #mosque #museum #constantinople #byzantine #istanbul #turkey #monument #patrimonio #patrimoine

The Cherry Bandit: When people think of the word "Bandit", an outlaw from old western USA may come to mind. But the word "bandit" was introduced to the English language in 1590 from the Italian language. It was later described as "one who is proscribed or outlawed; hence, a lawless desperate marauder, a brigand: usually applied to members of the organized gangs which infest the mountainous districts of Italy, Sicily, Spain, Greece, Iran, and Turkey". Marauding was one of the most common peasant reactions to oppression and hardship and populations towards the mid 20th century grow to 27 thousand in Italy and 20 million in China. . . . . . . . . . #themoreyouknow #throwback #throwbackthursday #bandits #bandit #history #turkey #turkiye #turkiye🇹🇷 #istanbul #constantinople #travel #traveller #wanderlust #travelwithme #comewithme

Hagia Sophia (holy wisdom in Greek) or Ayasofya in Turkish is one of istanbul's impressive sights. Once you enter this survived architectural marvel that is often referred to as the eighth wonder of the World, it will take you back and make you travel through the history. Built in 537, and until 1453, it served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral and the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted by the fourth Crusaders to a Roman Catholic Cathedral under the Latin Empire, and later in 1453, it was declared as a Mosque following the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman, and it was considered one of the holiest Islamic temples of the world. In 1935, under the order of Ataturk the founder of Today's Turkey, the Hagia Sophia became a Musuem, and today it is visited by nearly 10 000 people per day! The museum is undergoing some renovations, but this didn't lessen the enjoyment and the beauty of this place, especially the Christians mosaics from the Byzantine times being displayed alongside with the Islamic decorations from the Ottoman times are wonderful to watch! The ticket costs 60 Turkish Lira on site, and there are often long queues, unless you are with a tour guide, or you buy your ticket in advance. There's also a Musuem Pass that costs 175TL, and it allows you to visit all the Musuems managed by the Gouvernement. ... #hagiasofia #ayasofya #holywisdom #istanbultourism #tourguide #visitistanbul #wanderlust #instatraveling #wander #exploringourglobe #travelislife #history #byzantine #constantinople #islamic #istanbulmoments #istanbullove #culturetrip #istanbul #placetovisit #mytravelgram #beautifulsight #wonderfulplaces
